Professor Bulte is an Associate Professor in Engineering Science at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Oxford. Daniel obtained a BSc in theoretical physics and a PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Tasmania and spent two years as a Postdoc at the University of Toronto before moving to Oxford. He worked at the Oxford Centre for Functional Magnetic Resonance of the Brain for 12 years where he was a University Research Lecturer, before becoming a PI in the Department of Engineering Science in 2016. He is also a Fellow of St Hilda’s College Oxford, where he is an engineering tutor.

Daniel’s research focusses on developing low-cost, non-invasive, and accessible techniques of assessing cerebral physiology. The intention is to quickly assess subjects by combining easily obtained information and measurements into physiological models. These techniques can be used for streaming participants into different arms of clinical trials, make critical care decisions, or monitor long-term brain health. He uses data from MRI, transcranial Doppler ultrasound, pupillometry, respiratory gas analysis, heart rate, and blood pressure, as well as demographic and anatomical data.

Beyond research and teaching, Daniel is passionate about outreach and improving access. He has contributed to many events and programs aimed at increasing participation in science and education for under-represented groups. This extends to including these groups as research participants and ensuring that relevant information about sex, gender, race, and socioeconomic status are considered in the analysis.
