
Jonathan Rees is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Musculoskeletal Science at the University of Oxford.
He is Head of the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences (NDORMS) which is the largest musculoskeletal research department in Europe and is made up of three research Institutes, the Botnar Institute for Musculoskeletal Sciences, the Kennedy Institute for Rheumatology, and the Kadoorie Institute for Trauma, Emergency and Critical Care.
Besides leading this multidisciplinary department, Professor Rees runs his own research programme that address patient centred clinical priorities in shoulder pain and shoulder surgery, including national surgical trials and analysis of large observational data cohorts from national registries.
Besides his roles in Oxford, he has served on the Council of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society from 2012-2025 and held a NICE Fellowship to promote guidelines and standardisation of patient care. He became an NIHR Senior Investigator in 2021 and is a Past President of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society. He has authored numerous national healthcare guidelines and has advised several national bodies.
Despite his busy university and national work, he also continues in his role as a Consultant Orthopaedic Shoulder Surgeon at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford.
